CCF acknowledges effort made by government on UNCRPD

The Citizens’ Constitutional Forum would like to acknowledge the effort made by government in depositing the instrument of ratification to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

CCF believes that this is a positive step for the country in ensuring that every human being is treated equally thus creating equal opportunity and rights for all Fijian.

“Indeed this is a historic moment for Fiji especially to Fijians who have special needs that are now recognized and we should all respect this.

“This has been a long wait for people living with disabilities and organisations that stand up for the rights of persons with disability and having to indicate this commitment before the international body is an achievement,” said CCF CEO Sara Bulutani Mataitawakilai.

The convention was ratified early this month after being passed from parliament in March.

“We look forward to the implementation of this convention into our country and we hope to maintain and respect this rights for a more peaceful and democratic environment. Congratulations to all that have contributed to this achievement we look forward to many more of these positive changes,” said Mr. Mataitawakilai.

Ratifying conventions and treaties is a milestone, but implementing them and having legislations and providing progress report is another. This will require Government’s inclusive approach and close collaboration with its citizens and the civil society organizations.

Meanwhile CCF is urging the Government to honor its commitment to international treaties and those made at international level. We are yet to ratify the ICSPR, and ICCPR, while at the same time we have not heard any development on the National Action Plan on UPR and the State ICERD Report that has been long overdue.
