CCF calls on CMAG to assist Fiji in achieving a better democracy

Postdate: 4/ 03/ 2009

The Citizens’ Constitutional Forum (CCF) awaits the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) decision on Fiji, with a sense of foreboding, due to the anticipated suspension of Fiji from the Commonwealth.

“We believe that the Commonwealth can play a positive role in assisting Fiji to achieve a better democracy. Fiji needs to be rid of the current racially-biased electoral system. The Commonwealth’s support for Electoral Reform in Fiji could provide impetus for its achievement in a legitimate manner ,” CCF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rev Akuila Yabaki said.

“CCF strongly believes that the Commonwealth can play a key role in bringing urgency to the commencement of the President’s Political Dialogue Forum (PPDF) process through encouragement, advice and expertise,” Rev Yabaki said.

Suspending Fiji from the Commonwealth could be counter-productive for Fiji. Threats and isolation from the international community will not provide an answer to Fiji’s problems. The international community should remain engaged with Fiji ,” Rev Yabaki said.

Fiji has been suspended from the Commonwealth in the past. These suspensions led to a stronger forging of relationships between Fiji and countries with less admirable human rights standards.
